November lantern craft!

Nov 17, 2022 | craft, Festivals

Why not help your child make their own lantern to take a walk with or leave on the nature table?

How to make a lantern:

What you will need:

  • Any clear glass jar – with any label removed.
  • Different coloured tissue paper
  • Craft glue & a paint brush
  • String, ribbon or a length of finger knitting.
  • Tealight candle
  • Optional: autumn leaves for decoration

What to do:

  • Tear different coloured tissue paper into small pieces and put them in a bowl of container.
  • Paint a patch of glue into the outside of the jar and cover it with a piece of tissue paper. Paint another section of a glue and cover that with another colour of tissue paper. Continue until it is all covered.
  • If you want to decorate it further by adding and arranging some autumn leaves around the jar then do so.
  • Leave it to dry.
  • Once it’s dry, tie your string, ribbon or line of finger knitting around the neck of the jar, tying a tight knot then leaving enough length to make a handle for carrying that is long enough to be safe from any candle heat. Once your length has been decided upon tuck it under the string on the opposite side of the jar and as before tie a very tight knot.

And there you have it! A beautiful lantern ready for your Martinmas lantern walk!

As the weeks move through November the days will become ever darker and longer until, on that last Sunday the single light of the first candle on the Advert wreath is lit and the journey to Christmas begins.
